Something I’ve been thinking about lately: I sometimes see people wondering about why video games have custom interfaces instead of using standard UI widgets and modes of interaction.

This doesn’t seem to be limited to video games though. For example, no two ball games use the same kind of ball. Or the same kind of bat, or goal, or field. There seems to be something fundamental about games that makes them resist standardization.
