@damon@calckey.social I really hope this is a thing we get a second shot at. One of the few good things that comes with Mastodon holding a monopoly over the mindspace is that we can hope to try again to welcome BIPOC with a different service without some of that baggage.
We do, uh, have to fix our shit some though, first, so we don't just do it all over again.
@kichae@kitchenparty.online I do hope there’s a chance for the Fediverse in general. But, I’m not super hopeful. When I see the gatekeeping and talk to so many about their negative experiences. I’m truly bothered.

Now I'm wondering, what does this gatekeeping tend to look like? Would be useful to know in order to help combat it

Reading the descriptions of negative experiences from Mekka and others makes it clear to me that most of this stuff is invisible to those who aren’t experiencing it, since a lot of it happens in replies.
I’ve been wondering whether we couldn’t set up some kind of “toxic reply bat signal” that goes out for allies to jump in and do some proactive norm-setting (while un-CCing the original target).
