Something to keep in mind when you hear that voters care about the economy and vote the way they do because of the economy and vote for fascists because of the economy…
…is that for about half the population, “the economy” just means “whether a Republican is president.”
https://www.theguardian.com/business/2025/feb/27/trump-economy-poll
That reporter from The Guardian — and the Harris pollster they talk to — dance around this, but just somehow can’t quite put it together:
They have the causal arrow backwards for a •large• chunk of voters. That chunk didn’t vote for Trump because they thought the economy was bad under Biden; they thought the economy was bad •because• they vote for Trump.
(Yes, there are •also• plenty of people whose “economic concerns” are actually economic concerns. But they are only one part of Trump’s coalition, maybe not even a majority of it. Analysis that misses that fact misses the whole story.)
the two complete myths the GOP has managed to get too much of the country to believe is that any service is better done by unregulated, private industry, rather than government, and that the GOP is good for the economy.
repeated evidence to the contrary on both has somehow escaped too many folks and here we are.
@paul_ipv6 @inthehands correction - unregulated
@paul_ipv6 @inthehands The myth sticks, because the alternative is to admit others did it right, and that the USA is not greatest nation. Note that many US democrats have the same mental problem, just for other stuff…
Trumpistan lives in a quantum state where it is the greatest country in the world, and needs to be made great again at the same time.
@inthehands The belief by Republicans that Republican presidents are better for the economy defies all logic and evidence.
@inthehands Yeah #fiscalconservative is code for racist asshole. So is #economicanxiety
These fat fuck loser farmers who voted for DT and are now facing losing everything earned the karmic ass kicking they are about to receive.
It's easy folks: don't be a cruel shitbag. Vote for qualified people who care about human beings, human rights, and the Constitution.
@inthehands They thought the economy was bad because they voted for Trump in 2016? Why vote for him again then... I'm confused.
@VE3RWJ @inthehands No, they assume that the state of the economy aligns perfectly with the party of the person holding the presidency.
@niarbeht @inthehands Oh ok... they didn't realize the economy did better under Trump because of Obama's policies, similar to now with Biden's.
@VE3RWJ @inthehands It's entirely team-sports mentality, yes.
"If blue team behind desk, economy is bad. If red team behind desk, economy is good"
Absolutely no other factors come into play for far too many people.
@VE3RWJ @inthehands They trust Trump out of principle. Ergo, if he says the economy is bad, they believe it.
