Not saying it was the case here, almost certainly not, but…I wouldn’t be surprised to see Tesla dealerships doing this to themselves in the coming months, committing insurance fraud because they expect the payout to be better than the resale value — and/or just because they’re trying to flee the sinking ship.

And the list goes on. People are •angry•, and they’ve found their physical outlet.
Yet another one, sheeeesh:

Given that all these dealerships are apparently company-owned, not franchises, I wonder how quickly this impacts the company’s overall insurance costs if it keeps up.
I wouldn't be surprised to learn that people will be way more willing to torch #Tesla cars and building if they know they are company owned and not by individuals.
"Given that all these [Tesla] dealerships are apparently company-owned, not franchises, I wonder how quickly this impacts the company’s overall insurance costs if it keeps up."
insurance companies are really fast and experienced at changing rates based on changes in actuarial risk.
would indeed be a real pity if those costs further lowered company profitability. a damned shame...
@paul_ipv6 @inthehands the rates usually can’t change until the contract is up, does anyone outside of Tesla and their insurance company know how many years are left on that contract?
this is all monday morning quarterbacking lawyering but i'd bet the insurance folks have some clause that would let them just yank insurance at some level of risk or contract breach.
@inthehands yeah, Tesla caused a lot of commotion in states due to not working through franchise dealerships, with some states for a while trying to ban that practice.
In general I’m not opposed to the company ownership model, since I’ve almost universally found franchise dealerships scammy and sleazy on their own. But yeah, certainly seems like it might bite Tesla in some ways here.
@inthehands The poor fire department. Stupid "techno libertarians", not having their own firefighting apparatus to put out the fires in their dealerships.
