@mloxton @benroyce @tarheel we spend way too much time trying to convince people who are on very strong position, having made refusing the thing we want to convince them of, practically part of their identity. There is no chance of moving them, even with patience and good arguments, they just *can’t* accept them without having an identity crisis, and maybe losing friends.
It’s good to get their perspective and argue a bit, but to a point, i believe.
As @inthehands said, the only value there is in arguing with toxic idealist nonvoters is putting a spotlight on their broken minds and showing anyone quietly listening their spineless nature that only helps Trump
@benroyce @tshirtman @mloxton @tarheel @inthehands sometimes people can be swayed. It shouldn't be the expected outcome but it does happen.
@weyoun6 @tshirtman @mloxton @tarheel @inthehands
But there must be some higher order effect we can tap
Arguments combined with something else
Arguments alone seem tiny
@benroyce @weyoun6 @tshirtman @mloxton @tarheel I mean, once in a blue moon, you get something like this: https://www.comicsands.com/wisconsin-larry-trans-bill
We should always leave the door open for that moment. We can’t count on it, but we can leave the door open while we do the work.
@inthehands @weyoun6 @tshirtman @mloxton @tarheel
i love that guy
so much entrenched hate in our world
and out of nowhere this old dude just waltzes in with a practically effortless "i was bigoted, but i was wrong, thank you for educating me"
such a breath of fresh air
@benroyce @weyoun6 @tshirtman @mloxton @tarheel
Yeah, fresh air indeed. And so rare.
…but maybe not as rare as we think, just rare to see it. I believe that a lot of people have moments like this very quietly and completely out of sight, maybe so slowly and so low-key that they don’t even notice it happening. But change is possible.
@inthehands @benroyce @weyoun6 @mloxton @tarheel the fact that they met, as real people, not text on the internet you can project whatever on, or worse, snippets without context and presented in the most ridiculous way (and sometimes it doesn’t mean much help, there are people on all sides saying truly ridiculous things, some certainly are troll, but not all, and that’s what is presented to the other side as "normal"), probably helped understanding.
It’s hard for that to happen on social media.
@tshirtman @inthehands @weyoun6 @mloxton @tarheel
by design
trolls and agent provocateurs will mob any honest exchange online and ruin it, to shift the common understanding of what is going on, to cloud the mind, to enforce bigotry
and so you are absolutely correct: the standard of real life exchange cannot be matched on social media, ever
but we can at least approximate it
by nuking the trolls and psyop from orbit
for the only reason: so much of our social lives are moving to social media
@benroyce @tshirtman @inthehands @weyoun6 @mloxton @tarheel
"by nuking the trolls and psyop from orbit"
.. it's the only way to be sure!
