I’m halfway to agreeing with this piece by @rbreich. Reich’s argument in short:

- Federal courts are pretty consistently smacking down the Trump admin.

- For all the bluster about ignoring the courts, for all the delays, the Trump admin •is• still ultimately complying with them.

- There are clear signal from the Murdoch-y oligarch world that Trump will lose them if he starts defying the courts.

(It’s worth reading the whole thing.)

Robert Reich · My last tentative reason for nauseous optimismBy Robert Reich

Here’s why I’m only •halfway• to agreeing with @rbreich:

If you squint at what Justice Roberts said, if you squint at those WSJ editorials Reich linked to, one way of reading them is: “Hey, Trump, don’t defy the federal courts, because ••the SCOTUS will take care of it for you••” (ht @heidilifeldman for this analysis).

I think the Roberts court is ready to declare Trump a dictator with only the slimmest fig leaf of legal restraint. And you don’t have to defy the courts if the SCOTUS is going to let you do anything.

@inthehands @rbreich @heidilifeldman how I read it exactly. Nothing about following court rulings, just ‘let the appeal process bring it to me, I got you’.

@inthehands @rbreich @heidilifeldman thanks for sharing... yeah i view this whole thing (roughly) through the lens of wall st vs silicon valley and everything reich points out comports with that view, also agree that the SC can still fuck this up...

Which will last for as long as they still think there's a possibility that they will one day lose power and that a track-record of willfull-disregard might undermine the power of pardon
- There are clear signal from the Murdoch-y oligarch world that Trump will lose them if he starts defying the courts.
Ultimately, economies that rely on governments or societies that have no integrity or ability to be trusted in are economies that die. And, economies based on paper, rather than tangible (i.e., "real") wealth are even more susceptible to trust-related deaths.
