That is AS400 from IBM. Although discounted by IBM, it is still in production in many places running mission-critical apps. It's far better than the stuff people write today. This is how reliability looks. Why break it when it works?

@nixCraft Uh…because they need an entirely different inventory system with a different catalog for their website…because they can’t run a query across their company’s assets because their databases are balkanized and partitionned…because they have no real time sync between inventory and pos so that sales and shelf counts can update each other. Yeah, hundreds of independent AS400’s — not a good approach since 1995.

@jaybeavers @nixCraft YES, their inventory system is abysmal! As a Costco user, I'm constantly frustrated that I can't browse the offerings at my local warehouse, see what's new or on sale, they really only include the inventory for shipping. I can do this with just about every national retailer these days.

There's been work to bridge mainframes and the modern era for quite some time. Heck there's even K8s for Mainframes!
