I had 3 toots do nontrivial numbers today and it made mastodon nearly unusable. How do we not have collapsing notifications? It's so easy to do. Just one little GROUP_BY.
@jenniferplusplus It baffles me that Eugen, who must get just oodles of notifications all the time, has not implemented this. I feel like it would bother me so much I’d drop what I was working on and fix this.
@codesmith I have no idea, you'd think it would make this place literally unusable. Maybe he just has notifications off?

Collapsing notifications are one good reason for alternate clients. My favorite is Phanpy: https://phanpy.social/ but others like Elk. (I know there is at least one mobile native client too, but both of the above web clients are also good on mobile.)
At this point I can't imagine using the "Mastodon" clients for any reason other than compatibility testing.
@wikicliff @jenniferplusplus Yeah, Phanpy's grouping is very nice.
@jenniferplusplus this could trivially be implemented 100% on the client side, too, if need be
@jenniferplusplus I just disable notifications for boosts and favorites. They aren’t actionable anyway, and I can check them when I want.
@jenniferplusplus @Mabande My notifications are collapsed in @MonaApp . I don’t understand how anyone can use the Mastodon gGmbH apps or web interface. They are terrible, compared to the many good apps out there.
@jenniferplusplus I believe this is something being worked on for 4.3, if this is accurate
