JFC, why can't the bluesky team use ANY established protocol for ANYTHING?

Jenniferplusplus

tbh, I can sympathize with someone who looked around at the landscape of protocols to do asymmetric social publishing type things and decided that the only option is to start over.

But chat? Chat!? Use xmpp! Use matrix! Use signal! Use IRC! IDGAF, but do not reinvent *this* wheel.

what the fuck

@jenniferplusplus I'm very sympathetic for the social publishing problem.

I am a _lot_ less sympathetic for chat-related systems when XMPP is RIGHT THERE.

@hrefna I really can't see how it's anything other than hostile and protectionist for bsky to ignore every other option for DMs and invent something unique to them.

It casts all their talk about federation in a very distinctive light.

@jenniferplusplus isn’t…isn’t the XMPP creator on the Bluesky board?!?

@jenniferplusplus I think their goal is to bundle it into the same protocol. It's a lot like how Fediverse handles DMs as secret Notes, rather than by using an actual chat system. (I could hope for the latter to change, but it would add a lot of complexity to an already complex system, including another layer to host and more ports to expose on the firewall. Maybe this is remotely related?)

@blake I fully plan to use xmpp as the dm protocol for Letterbook, fwiw. There's a ton of precedent for doing this.

@jenniferplusplus The more the merrier; good luck! (you're going to need it)

@blake there are existing implementations I hope to reuse. If it comes to implementing xmpp from scratch, then I'll rexamine this plan

@jenniferplusplus it’s extraction capitalism at its finest. “How can we monetize this?”
