Hey folks! I've opened a bunch of new beta testing slots for @radiant, my Mastodon app for iPhone.

Get them while they're hot 🔥

I'd love to get any feedback and find any new bugs before I submit a day zero v1.0.1 update to App Review.

Boosts / reblogs appreciated 🙏

@jknlsn @radiant @binarytango Taking a look now. Your content-loading messages are hilarious!

@radiant @binarytango@mstdn.binarytango.com @maxleibman hahaha thank you! I try to entertain myself first and foremost, they have been there since shockingly early in the apps life 😂

@jknlsn @radiant@mastodon.radiant.social I think your pricing is very reasonable - but making it show up as per week really made a scammy impression. I’ve only see shady apps going that route, trying to hide their ridiculous prices. You have no need for that, I think it’ll fly better with users to make them the familiar month/year prices shown

@distantnative hey, thanks for the feedback. The main reason it shows weekly is to make it an easy comparison of like to like numbers.

I'll take that on board though and maybe change it, appreciate the feedback!

@mi thanks, me too! It's the work of the immensely talented @matthewskiles 🔥

@smartasshat @radiant you just need to join the TestFlight beta linked in the post! If you have any issues with TestFlight let me know and I'll try and help.

You'll need the TestFlight app from Apple first, linked below, or you can preorder and try the app on Monday on first release!

@smartasshat Ah that's great, let me know what you think!

@jknlsn @radiant will definitely check this one out when it goes live!

@jknlsn @radiant Preordered! Will definitely provide some feedback after I have a chance to get into it.

One feature I've been really keen on having in a Mastodon client is the ability to filter out posts from my local timeline that are already in my home timeline. I like to scroll through both and as such have to scroll past the same things multiple times.

@sass @radiant that's not in version 1.0, but it is on the backlog so keep your eye out for it

Completely agreed, be much easier to filter out!

@ radiant@radiant.social @jknlsn

First impression: looks smooth - a little rough around the edges. For instance when answering to this thread, it’s ver confusing on where I need to go to start typing my reply, as the cursor does not automatically jump down.

For comparison my standard client adds a clear text box above the toot I am answering to.

@Kurorori hmm that's a great point! I think I must not have tried to reply to a long post myself embarrassingly haha

I'll have a think about how I can fix that! Can't promise it will make it for v1.0, but keep an eye out for it soon. Thanks for the feedback 🙏

@radiant @jknlsn So fair I’m loving it. It’s got some bug and slowness, but that’s to be expected. Account registration is my only major pain point on all these apps. Given how usernames work, having some level of autocomplete for instances would be nice. Typing WillisPrime@mastodon.social is clunky. And when I try and register to smaller instances it’s not giving me the prompt to navigate to their login. But I love the UI/UX!

@radiant @WillisPrime yeah that’s fair. Thanks for trying it out!

On the instance autocomplete, you can also just type the instance and it’s a little easier but not as clear in the UI! I’d like to have some form of prompt or autocomplete though as well eventually

@radiant I forgot to mention, but feel free to tag me or leave TestFlight feedback for any bugs you encounter, it all helps me track them down and try and fix them 😊

@radiant @jknlsn So far I’m preferring it to Ivory. I would love to see some more gesture a-la Apollo. But it’s clean, and I like the layout.

@WillisPrime thank you! Gestures are on the backlog but not ready yet I'm afraid

@jknlsn Just testing this now (thanks!). My first suggestion — it would really help if you posted a few screenshots of the app on the @radiant account.

@dgiffin you just need to install the TestFlight app if you don't have it already, and then tappin on the link again should get you right to it! Let me know if it still doesn't work

@jknlsn Thanks, worked fine on the second attempt 🤷‍♂️

@dgiffin strange, had someone else report a similar issue earlier but glad it got sorted!

@jknlsn Sorry Jake but I’ve not been able to put much time into testing your app, I’ve removed it, but best wishes, I hope it does well 👍

@radiant @jknlsn so much quicker than the official mastodon app. So far so good. The only issue I've found so far is that the reply/ interface needs a larger tap area to hit to start typing

@dammitjanet @radiant thank you!

Will work on that for the next beta build, appreciate the feedback

@radiant @jknlsn and the app crashed after sending this reply

@radiant @dammitjanet ah ok yeah that’s not great. If you get the prompt, please send through the crash logs so I can try and get to the bottom of it

@bgrinter @radiant @gruber just daily usage really! Especially posting, there are a few bugs reported that I haven't been able to replicate yet.

Build 40 should be available on TestFlight now and addresses lots of feedback I've gotten in the last 24 hours, tweaking UI for clarity and fixing a few bugs. Keen to hear any thoughts and feedback!

@radiant @jknlsn I’ve been using it for an hour or so and I’m really enjoying it! Great work!

@hawt thanks so much! That's very kind of you.

Let me know if there is anything that could be improved!

@jknlsn @radiant @gruber Does it have timeline sync between iOS / iPadOS / macOS?

@ravigupta @radiant @gruber not currently, at the moment and on launch it is only available for iOS sorry.

I'm working on the iPad and Mac versions at the moment and I'm also looking into options for timeline and data sync! No promises for a release date just yet on this though

@jknlsn Things I can confirm works with a quick test on an M1 Mac:

* Works great on even non-Mastodon servers with Mastodon API support, like Akkoma. Not all clients do this. In fact, a lot of them don’t.

* Works fine on a Mac, but does show a tiny UI. I know that this might not be a huge priority for you, but adding iPad support would make it work better on M1 Macs too.

Will send more feedback later on once I’ve had a chance to use it more.

@f hey, thanks a bunch for testing it out!

That's really exciting about Akkoma! Radiant interacts exclusively with the Mastodon API so it *should* work if a software is compliant, but it's not been a priority to test that yet.

I thought I had turned off availability on M1 machines... haha glad to hear it worked for you though! Adding iPad support, and full Mac support, is on my backlog and I'm working on it but it's not ready just yet. Thanks a ton for the feedback though, really helpful

@jknlsn Sure thing 🙂 I took several open source Mastodon clients when I started on Mastodon and converted them to work on Akkoma and I can tell you that the feed parsing failed on most of them since there were subtle differences in the data received from a Mastodon server vs. Akkoma.

So either the Akkoma side improved (which I don’t think it did) or your code handles the parsing of the data much better than most of the other apps I’d looked at.

Will send more feedback once I’ve had a chance to play around with it. I’m always looking for the perfect Mastodon app. So far, I’ve had to add the features I want to existing open source apps but I’d much rather not have to do all the maintenances myself 😛
@jknlsn Some more feedback in case it is helpful — just a caveat, I don’t know if the features I look for in a Mastadon client are the ones that other people are interested in 🙂

What I really liked about the app:

* The home feed filtering option to view just links, media etc.

* Multi-tags

* The threading — I like how your post thread view looks like. The client I’m using at the moment gives a way abbreviated thread of messages. I hadn’t looked into it till now since I didn’t notice that the threads were abbreviated 🙂 Will need to dig into it now ….

* Post scheduling

* The ability to create post threads

Things that didn’t work well or features I’d like to see:

* I get an “Error 404” whenever I restart the app. MIght be due to me being on Akkoma and some API endpoint being different.

* Remembering your last position on the feed so that you don’t have to scroll back each time you launch the app and try to find where you were ..

* The post editor does not appear to query the server to see what the character limit for a post is. My server has a character limit of 8000 but it shows 500 per post.

* The ability to filter out by followed hashtag and/or list members from the main timeline

* I can’t seem to create lists. Not sure if this is failing because I’m on Akkoma and the API endpoint might be different (in case you’re creating the list on server as well and not just locally) or something else but just letting you know.

* If I go to a user’s profile, I notice the menu has an option to add to a list, but the menu option does not seem to do anything when you click on it. But this might be related to me not being able to create lists in the first place.

@f thanks a ton for the feedback!

- error 404: could you please email me the logs from settings? I'll look into it

- looking into options for remembering your last position in the feed!

- ah interesting. I'm attempting to, but I may need to sign up on a server with a higher limit and test further

- filtering your timeline and followed hashtags from the main timeline is on the backlog!

- ah ok interesting, might be a slight difference in end points for the lists

@radiant @jknlsn

Testing now, and until I get notifications from things I’ve interacted with, I won’t have any opinions on comparing it to Tusker.

@radiant @atomicangel thanks for checking it out!

Do you mean notifications like this one? Or do you mean in the app?

@radiant @jknlsn

I mean push notifications and in the app. With Tusker while the interface was good for some reason I wasn’t being notified. Admittedly I didn’t report it despite using TestFlight because it didn’t bother me a whole bunch. Lazy user issues.

@jknlsn @radiant Any plans on developing a sister app for the IPad?

@radiant @Graygoose absolutely. I’m releasing with just iPhone for now so I can get it out there and start getting it in peoples hands!

iPad app will definitely come along 😊
