Malaysia is officially part of

I was honestly shocked because I 100% believed that they will tell us "We'll get back to you in 5 years."

BTW, this is a move that a lot of Malaysians support so please don't start telling me we're now part of the evil empire ok? I will just mute you (for your sakes because I can get spicy)

Many people don't understand Global South perspectives, so I don't expect anyone to start understanding now ....

The Edge Malaysia · Malaysia, 12 other countries officially added as BRICS partner countriesMalaysia has been recognised as one of 13 nations officially added to BRICS as a partner country, a bloc that collectively accounts for one-fifth of global trade. According to an update from @BRICSInfo on X, the bloc officially added 13 new nations to the alliance as partner countries, though not yet as full members.

@liztai I wish my country would follow the BRICS path. Right now we are on a road to nowhere good.

@CaraBruar it's a complicated decision and shouldn't be made lightly. For eg I ttly understand why Indonesia and Singapore wants to be cautious about it. For Malaysia it makes sense. For your country it may not be a good decision.

@liztai I’m never sure that the reporters who write articles like this know any more than I do. The only specific thing they say is thumbing their noses at the US and Europe, which has a low hard-currency value. How did they sell it to the Malaysian populace?

@Virginicus you are wearing your Western lenses hard lol. Not sure if I can help you see another pov.

The article actually is quite accurate in depicting the benefits that the countries hope to grt from it, which is why I shared.

Anyway, the Asean way has always been to make trade cooperations. We like neutrality and to trade with as many people as we can and Brics enables that.

You can do your own research but Western media is pretty hopeless so far, very skewed & paranoid coverage.

@liztai Let me try again. Trade in *what*? Which Malaysian industries have new markets now? I know enough about Russia, Algeria, and so on to know what they’re selling. Who benefits on your end?

@liztai If they didn’t tell you, that sometimes happens, too. They tried that with us when they were setting up the TPP; everyone revolted when we found out the terms.

@Virginicus so what? Not that we have any choice in this matter lol. However, in general I think it's a good move for us.

@liztai@hachyderm.io A fellow Southeast Asian here. I am more eager to see stronger ties between ASEAN member states. My country is presently being bullied by China but we are also dependent on them economically (who isnt). While BRICS will possibly open financial opportunities, my countrymen will surely oppose such a move.
