Question for the #fediverse about how we relate to new #llm #AI:
If you find the free extraction of value from the internet for the training of for-profit disrupting AIs problematic, and,
Are fond of the #fediverse …
How do you feel about the fact that the fediverse can and is being scraped (try searching Google)?
It’s in the nature of the technology (right?) which is arguably only a minor step toward decentralised internet participation.
Is the #fediverse already showing its age?
I’m presuming here that’d it would be naive to think fediverse content wouldn’t be scooped up for LLM data (I’d bet it would have some distinct value as training data).
And I’m also presuming that there are alternative and viable decentralised social media technologies that truly limit access (eg #matrix ?).
An implicit critique/query here is that mimicking 10-15 yr old platforms in federated form may not be enough of the internet revolution we actually need now.
A general conceptual distinction probably at play here is “online community” vs “social media”. A community has walls and gate keeping of some sort. Media is a mass consumable entity, open to all when in digital format.
Whatever the aims, mainstream #fediverse seems to be breathing “social media” air either from a practice perspective or technological one.
