@janl I saw this thread as it was happening and I'm seeing it again now, and I still have no idea why this is supposed to be a wtf.

@bodil “software never told me it was making network connections to swaths of random hosts on the internet” is not a wtf?

@janl P2P software is generally expected to do this in my mind, yes. Syncthing isn't exactly being circumspect about it, if anyone had bothered actually reading the docs.

@bodil Thread says explanation is buried in a forum thread. I’d expect an in-UI heads-up.

@janl He linked to the actual docs, not a forum thread. He also states he didn't bother finding out what relay servers are actually for before getting mad. hachyderm.io/@mattly/114213924

@bodil @janl show me where on this page is says syncthing is a p2p program

you have to read between the lines

if you're telling me that I should be doing more research about the programs I'm using, well, that's fair, but I also expect those programs to be more forthright about their behavior

@bodil @janl I will even argue that this sentence:

Your data is your data alone and you deserve to choose where it is stored, whether it is shared with some third party, and how it’s transmitted over the internet.

suggests that the relay behavior should be OFF by default. It is not letting me choose whether to share my data (encrypted, sure, but still sharing) with some third party, it just assumes I want to do that

@mattly @janl You're not wrong, I have a hard time understanding why they'd make a website which completely fails to mention what used to be the app's primary selling point, and probably the primary reason some might prefer to avoid it as well.
