I’m surprised that while my Bluesky account has grown by 8000 followers — DOUBLED to 16k+ — in just the last week since the election, my Mastodon count hasn’t changed at all.

Is Mastodon not seen as an alternative to Twitter?

Or is my account hard to find for those not following me?

Honestly curious.

@BrentToderian I think there is still a decent discoverability problem on Mastodon when you compare it to the start packs Bluesky is doing…that and the fact that I personally believe they’re riding hype train and seeing a lot more growth than here

The only problem with the U9 is that unbeknownst to you, it monitors your thoughts and locks the doors and auto-drives you to a prison labor camp if it determines you are impure. Other than that it is a great car.

[Edit: So this 'joke' (never joke on social media) was misunderstood. The point here was not some comment on China vs. US prison regimes, but rather that sometimes the more convenient thing comes with strings attached.]

@mastodonmigration @digitalrodent @wonkothesane @BrentToderian

The US population is less than 1/3rd China's population, and yet we have more people working in prison labor camps than China.

Most US prison labor camp employees, are innocent. As in, haven't been convicted of a crime, and are in jail pre-trial because they're Black and poor.

One of these pictures was taken during slavery, on a cotton plantation. The other 2 were taken a few years ago, on a "prison farm"

The US has the largest slave population in the world.

Locking an innocent person up under threat of death, and forcing them to work for you for free for years, is slavery.

While California was feeling smug about ourselves for voting for Harris, we also rejected a ballot initiative that would have prevented prison slave labor. We like enslaving people.

Governing · California’s Anti-Slavery Measure Failed, Allowing Forced Labor to ContinueOther states, including Nevada, are deleting references to slavery in their constitutions and banning forced prison labor. California voters rejected that path when they turned down Prop. 6.

@mekkaokereke @digitalrodent @wonkothesane @BrentToderian

100%. And it is about to get a lot bigger. And corporations turning over information from people's use of social media is going to be a big issue. Sorry, again for the confusing post above. The point was not about the relative incarceration regimes, but rather the risks associated with rushing to embrace the new shiny corporate social media alternative.

@mekkaokereke @mastodonmigration @digitalrodent @wonkothesane @BrentToderian

I really hate to say say this but we suck and until we change. Nothing will. So maybe the troubles were about go through will be worth it in the end

Not to over ride your issue but there’s about 50 people in modern slavery today Who cares ❓ Genocide pick one who cares the day after ❓

Democrats have a Old Leadership

and communication. Not so much

While California was feeling smug about ourselves for voting for Harris, we also rejected a ballot initiative that would have prevented prison slave labor.

@mekkaokereke Yeah, that one is just wild. Like, the wording was so amazingly clear: Vote yes if you want to abolish slavery. And like 53% of people were like, "Nah, let's keep slavery around."

We are nowhere near as enlightened as so many people like to pretend we are.

@Legit_Spaghetti My question is: why TF is a ballot initiative even necessary for a topic like slavery? Any situation in which you explicitly have to ask such questions is already more than effed up. @mekkaokereke

@Legit_Spaghetti@mastodo.neoliber.al @mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io also considering Cali is her home state and she ran as a cop, was a cop in cali, nothing about this is particulary progressive

@mekkaokereke
yeah

folks *really* don't get it at all.

many/most actually believe the US abolished slavery.

But it just is not true. Not some abstract noise, It's *right there* in the 13th.

"Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude,

*except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted,*

shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction. "

and so right there in our prison system and right there in every post-Civil War period and right there in Sugarland (yes, that industry and place - it's in the name) ...which reminds me, if I were still in HS library, I'd ask her to speak at virtual event:
