FWIW, we've been using both of these for years with Linux:

  • Canon MF210 (B&W laser with scanner -- requires driver)
  • HP LaserJet 200 color M251nw (no special driver -- but sometimes you get one thing you can print to and one that reports toner levels but won't print)

@clive I've never had problems with Brother printers, though I can't remember what happened to the previous brother printer we used to have. We have an Epson now for the color printing (school projects for the kids), and it is a toner monster.

@dusk @clive @mekkaokereke @tehstu @hazelnot @teadrinker my only addition to that gem of a review is to consider spending a few mins to look for the Brother printer with duplex printing - that’s super useful if you have to often print out longer documents to read (or contracts to sign etc). I have one I bought in 2020 - it handled homeschooling for a few years and is still just working. Reliable. Quiet. Never holds us hostage.

@Rycaut @dusk @clive @mekkaokereke @tehstu @hazelnot @teadrinker I’m still on my Brother duplex color laser from about 2011. Only trouble it’s ever given is it needed a firmware update early on to avoid a crash that required a reboot, but it’s been a rock-solid piece of hardware. Saved a ton of money in the long term.

Meanwhile, I have such infrequent printing needs that I keep believing that the free inkjets that folk give away are gonna work if I just give ‘em a fresh cartridge.

I’ve got a small flock of them, now. None of them are functional.

Made the mistake of connecting an HP Envy to my wifi. Such convenience, wireless printing!!
Never have I ever watched a device update its own firmware with no interaction from me.

Must be part of their brave initiative to protect users from malicious printer cartridge microchips!!

@clive @mekkaokereke @tehstu @hazelnot @teadrinker got so mad at brother for the last POS inkjet i got from them, they’re dead to me. got a canon B&W laser copier and never looked back. i rarely need color prints. i’ll just go to a print shop and get it done that way.

this is what I too realized – fortunately, I don’t need to print in color very often, so I can just cycle over to the nearby staples whenever I do

@mekkaokereke @tehstu @clive @hazelnot @teadrinker the Brother laser printers are pretty decent. I have two in the home office.
