twitter has substantially replaced the once inchoate public square with some hybrid of pro wrestling match and unscrupulous tabloid. when i think of the fraction of my life i gave to that site, of all the musings i posted to help make it, i just want to vomit and repent.

1. always a strangers liminal space, it was first warped by the sheer force of Trump’s engagement metrics and then, like every other mass comms medium, intentionally wrecked so it could be instrumentalized for right wing propaganda

2. i know i’m weird but it’s surprising to me how many of my friends & acquaintances are willing to continue to tolerate it

@phillmv it's easy to mock some of the tetchiness on the fediverse about who to federate with and whether mastodon.social is too big etc but we've learned liminal space are such fragile spaces and we've really know idea how to govern and protect them.

@interfluidity

i feel like this dream of a flat, unified namespace where All Conversation Happens is just that - a fantasy. as we experience it via Big Social the gaps & governance are papered over by armies of content moderators & unaccountable product managers.

i’m idealistic to a fault but there’s something neat about this messy yet human scale drama, little islands of content occasionally squabbling but mostly working together
