Time for an #introduction maybe.
Hello I'm Raphaël.
I'm an Open Source Infrastructure Engineer, specialized in Config Management, Cloud Infra, DevOps & Kubernetes.
I also often post about Genealogy in many forms.
Happy to meet all of you!
@raphink Welcome to the new thing! Or rather, new to us former birdsite users
@timstoop Thanks. My Mastodon had been dormant for 5 years, it's good to actually get to use it
@krisbuytaert @timstoop Yes I think so.
My hachyderm profile is brand new though, I migrated today from mastodon.social as it was getting too slow.
@krisbuytaert @timstoop I seem to remember April 2017 was Twitter migration practice time
@raphink Let's hope this is the beginning of the end for the large social media companies At least, that's what I'm hoping for. Fediverse seems way more democratic.
@timstoop Not the first attempt. We'll see how it holds up.
So far, it seems the Fediverse has reached about 7M users and it still working fine.
@raphink Welcome. You won't miss the toxicity on Twitter and I think you'll find a lot more real, honest engagement here.
@atoponce Oh well, the Twitter crowd will come here at some point
But at least I'm already seeing crypto-bros have made their own servers, that might help to filter some things out
@raphink They will, but there are no algorithmic decisions being made about what you see and what you don't, everything is chronological, filters can be applied to every aspect of instance, and blocking can happen at both the user and instance level. There's other things like no full text searching and not seeing post stats in the web interface that help. Bad people are bad people of course, but at least the platform isn't rewarding their behaviors.
@atoponce also, no liked content in timeline, and no ads
@raphink And no proprietary JavaScript!
