The 'median' is a well-known statistic that tells you where the half-way point of your data is.
Its lesser-known dual statistic, the 'comedian', is a statistic that tells you when there's something funny about your data.
@simontatham OK, I seriously laughed out loud at this one.
@simontatham Simon.
Ok, Ok, I chuckled!
@simontatham That's just mean.
@simontatham Just avoid putting your data through the co-mode.
@simontatham took me a moment ...
@simontatham how do i squeak someone like a rubber toy violently through a computer
@simontatham stealing this for the next time I'm teaching high school maths
@simontatham If you have problems with noise in your data, though, use the Calmer Comedian.
@simontatham Ah, the 'comedian' -- the statistic that proves laughter really is the best outlier.
Because sometimes, the true value of data isn’t just in the numbers but in the stories they tell, even if they’re a bit cheesy
Statisticians are taught about variance and covariance.
Few know about the median vs the comedian.
Fewer still know about the mode vs the commode.
@simontatham Wouldn’t the comedian be the data point furthest from the median?
@simontatham the mode tells you which value has the most entries in your data. the commode is where most datasets belong.
@simontatham oh! with apologies to @CliftonR!
@simontatham if i don't have any arrows, then you can't invert them!
