I'm on the phone with a hotel in Singapore trying to clarify something about the booking and I couldn't understand the person at all.
I was like 'maybe I"ve been away so long I don't understand the Singaporean accent anymore'
But actually it is 'I don't understand French people who learned to speak English in Singapore and have a heavy French-Singlish accent' (I know more than 5 people like that. I don't understand them either)
@skinnylatte I live in country Australia. Sydney people speak much faster and with different emphasis. Same language but takes ages to recalibrate my hearing. Like watching Scottish TV, that takes even longer.
@skinnylatte When I first moved to Singapore my office was on the 14th floor of the Albert Complex in Bugis area. On or about the first day of work I rode the elevator with two young ladies who were chatting to each other the whole way up. It wasn't until about the 10th floor that I realized that they were actually speaking English!
In the years that followed I eventually learned to parse the Singlish quite well, but Im still occasionally thrown by the phasing of things.

I used to work in a science lab with a guy from mainland China who sounded like he'd learned English in Poland and Naples. W for V, adding random -a at the end of every word that needed to flow better, alongside a thick traditional Mandarin English accent... He was so fun, he just threw himself into every sentence at full speed and you picked it up after a bit
