Made black bean paste. Black bean noodles. Masala chai. Chicken rice. Ginger garlic sauce. Chilli sauce.
Eating the way I would back in Singapore for less than $10 a day is an exhausting all day activity when I make things myself
I think about the difference between the food culture I grew up with, and the one I have now, quite often
The other day someone asked me what hot sauces and sambal we buy in Southeast Asia if I am so often complaining about the ones here and I was like, that’s probably it: none? Everything is homemade usually!
The jars of sambal I might buy are specifically made for people going abroad who don’t have homemade stuff, not stuff we would buy over there hehe
@skinnylatte I remember when I was studying in Australia the mother of my Indonesian classmate gave me a bottle of her homemade chili garlic sauce. It was the best I'd ever tasted, and nothing I've tasted from store-bought has ever come close.
@pixiecata I lived with this auntie in Jakarta who would make a different sambal every day for lunch. To match the dish she was making that day. It was wondrous.
