Wife birthday weekend!

1. I got a local SE Asian illustrator (Teo Octavia) to draw us + our pets

teooctavia.art

I got it printed by Golden State Coop, which can do all the print and scan and dev (also for film)

I’ve been quite busy lately so I’ve been outsourcing work to them, otherwise I’d have printed this myself (printing is one of my many hobbies)

Supporting creatives is one of the things I can and want to do in this time

2. Yesterday felt like a turning point for us in our immigration journey. We spent lunch talking about where we might go. Probably back to our part of the world if things decline. Not a next month thing but a ‘keep in mind’ thing. At least we’ll be warm and have good food. I said I don’t want to struggle anymore if we have to leave. I am not willing to go and be an immigrant again somewhere else on another continent that might not want us, that might also be at risk of war. We left our homes to have our marriage recognized and if that’s at risk then I’d rather be warm and well fed honestly.

I feel better knowing we have some options. She grew up in Paris and loves a good chocolate pot au crème. We had a delicious lunch at Gallinette in the Outer Sunset. Very good, but we still prefer Côte Ouest Bistro, which we went to last birthday.

(We’ve both had a certain degree of uncertainty and unpredictability and resilience in our lives. I know that if this was going to become a up and go moment, we are great partners in that. We left and moved to SF in just a couple of weeks, 8 years ago. No reason why we can’t do that now. We are very well versed in international and life logistics.)

Between all of the places we call home: France, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, India. There are plenty of options. It all comes down to what the world looks like. Ideally we don’t have to leave, because I am tired of moving. I think my personal red line is if Obergefell v. Hodges is struck down and same sex marriage is illegal again. If there’s another pandemic and we don’t feel safe. If we don’t have space to lead meaningful lives without protection. Then America truly wouldn’t offer us very much at all. We could potentially go to any of those places and live off our savings and figure out the next phase of our lives. I’ve set up my life with the goal of ‘I can potentially work on stuff I care about anywhere’.

But we really like it here. We like our lives here very much. But seeing what happened at the White House yesterday it feels like a seismic shift in how I’m thinking about things. Feels like the world order is shifting. I’m certain we’ll still have a few more good years here, but I feel better knowing we have alternatives.

3. The Chocolate Dragon cafe in Rockridge is the lower priced chocolate cafe I prefer over SF’s Dandelion. The European style Bittersweet hot chocolate is better and cheaper. They also carry a massive range of chocolate from around the world, including Fossa (Singapore) brand’s ’soy milk and youtiao’ flavor chocolate bar.

This neighborhood is so nice

4. Birthday dinner at Belotti in Oakland! One of the best Italian restaurants anywhere. Phenomenal pastas

@skinnylatte Oooh when I get to SF, I'd love to meet you there.

@skinnylatte happy birthday! Is that octopus on the pasta!?
