lol I went off on some guy whining that nobody wants to speak Spanish to him and that must mean Hispanic people in the Bay Area are illiterate

where do these entitled people come from

Haha he deleted it. Basically he was like I speak Spanish so well better than Hispanic people wahhh nobody will respond to me in Spanish

One time I was in a Chinese dumpling restaurant and this lady asked me to rate her child’s spoken Japanese

The number of monolingual English speakers who want a fucking cookie for learning how to say hello in another language!

(To be clear I am supportive of all types of language learning efforts but only English speakers expect to be praised for learning or attempting anything, often when they won’t afford the same grace to people learning English)

@skinnylatte yup. You're usually not doing anyone a favor by speaking their language badly if they already speak yours better. Them putting up with your poor communication is asking them to bear a burden. They might be happy to help you learn but by golly they're helping you. Not sure why that's not obvious to everyone.

@skinnylatte

Exactly, I dk how many times I have had to point out to wp that the person they're mocking for their accent knows more languages than they do.

@skinnylatte I am German, learned English and French in school, Swedish, Italian an Japanese in University (not fluent, but getting by) and my most important memories of learning a foreign language are
a) the feeling of absolute joy and triumph after something went cluck and I actually started to understand what people said
b) the way native speakers treated me like a child and/or actually stupid because I could not verbally express myself in a nuanced way.

It was the most important lesson

@bleistifterin @skinnylatte For me, whilst polishing up my French when living in France it was the moment when I caught a glimpse of their kind of humour, the word-play and the nuances which indicated when they were taking the piss. A truly special step into the heart of the culture.
