hihi #introduction
I'm Fatima! I also go by sugaroverflow, omgsugar, and glucose (see: character limits)
I'm focused on #community and #DevRel at GitLab and will toot about #tech, #open-source, and navigating #grief.
Formerly a #drupal contributor, #DEI lead, and #backend dev, I was awarded the Rising Star for efforts in advocacy.
I love all things sweet, escape rooms, and science fiction!
@sugaroverflow I would so love to create an escape room with you for an open source conference one of these years!
@communiteatime create an escape room? like a BOF? that would be really cool
will warn you that I'm very competitive and have high escape room standards hahaha
@sugaroverflow Eeeeep! I will do my best to live up to them! Just curious, what has been one of your favorite escape rooms you’ve ever done - or made?
@communiteatime I've never actually made an escape room! I participated in building out a mega game years ago and that was the biggest logistical "game" I've put together.
Ahhhh, tbh I've probably done about 40-50 escape rooms at this point haha. Some of the most memorable ones include consistent themes, connected puzzles, non-linear challenges, and aren't focused "here's a room with a bunch of locks", but a story that flows through each puzzle.
@communiteatime Ofc a lot of places do have a storyline or theme to the room, but I've often found that the theme isn't consistent enough to flow with the puzzles.
So at some point, you're in the room just looking for more locks to open and things to match (e.g I have two number locks and two sets of numbers of on the wall).
vs a room that is really story dependent e.g. we're time traveling through history, I've got artifacts from different ancient cultures, I need to match them to the map.
@sugaroverflow I think we are on the EXACT same page about this!
@sugaroverflow Those sound amazing! I did a virtual escape room series for an online tutoring/enrichment during 2020 and it was so much fun! We had codes and puzzles that told the story Eurasian/African Civ from the Persians to the Italian Renaissance with a final pep talk (via letter!) from Petrarch, saying civilization is worth it, especially in hard times. Each episode revealed a word to eventually reveal “The opposite of war is civilization,” paraphrasing Ursula LeGuin.
@communiteatime That sounds like a really cool virtual escape room!! I love that it had an inspiration and trajectory based on the historical story
@sugaroverflow to escape rooms (& more but I’m a puzzle
lover and escape rooms are the perfect kind of puzzle to me!)
@JohannesDienst hiyaaaa! happy week 15(?) of devrel! how are you doing?
@sugaroverflow I am tired, to be honest, but also happy and grateful for the last 3 months. I never learned so much in such a short time span.
Now it is time for the holidays.
Wish you all the best and so nice to read about you here in the future!
