Proton uses a trustless architecture. End-to-end encryption and zero access encryption means we cannot decrypt your messages and hand them over to governments.
Your privacy is mathematically ensured, and no election can change that.
@protonprivacy yeah, but your CEO has been making statements in support of a right-wing authoritarian government, so…?
@thisismissem @protonprivacy So why does that matter? Proton products are great. I stand behind Proton products. I don't accept the cancel culture these days. Accept that there will always be people you don't like or accept. The world will never be at peace. Hate will always be there. It is something that will never change. Same thing with Elon Musk drama. People would rather not ride their Tesla anymore because of Elon. Is the Tesla as a product bad? #stopcancelculture
@yeechie @protonprivacy this isn't cancel culture, this is me saying:
As a business customer of proton, where my company is a potential target of policies from the US Government (FOSTA/SESTA and friends), it gives me great concern to see their CEO cosying up to the people who wish my business to not exist.
I picked proton because it guaranteed me privacy, but I worry that this new relationship to the new US president could put my company / clients at risk.
It's great to say "we stand for this" and that "we're politically neutral", but the actions of the CEO have clearly demostrated that may not be the case going forwards.
We have no relationship whatsoever with Trump or his administration.
All of our encryption is open source and publicly audited, and we cannot decrypt your messages or share them with third parties: https://proton.me/community/open-source
@protonprivacy @thisismissem @yeechie And neither did Zucc until he decided to remove factchecking to gain his approval
@kainisenni how does encryption relate to fact checking ?
@jdbar It doesn't. It served to illustrate how "We have no relationship whatsoever with Trump or his administration." is not necessarily a permanent point, especially in light of earlier statements by Proton and their CEO.
Proton have publicly admitted to monitoring who you email or get emails from, and shutting down accounts they think are being used as throwaway accounts to sign up to websites for example.
Their privacy is marketing.
@rzeta0 @kainisenni
I did not know about that, nor do I know if it is regular practice for managing emails... Are there any email provider which do not monitor this ? Or self hosting only ?
We expect Google-et-al to mine our emails.
But Proton go around making huge claims about privacy.
They don't go around saying "we don't read your emails but we do read who you email and who emails you - and we make decisions based on that".
Why raise this now? Because it adds another data point to the other news about their CEO's behaviour.
@rzeta0 @kainisenni indeed they should be more transparent about that, but this does not answer my question. Is it even possible to get a better privacy email provider ? Or is Proton the best that can be anyway ?
Sorry I can't answer that question. Discussions do pop up regularly about options.. mostly driven by people fearing the Trump administration.
I think tutamail was mentioned but again I didn't check myself.
@protonprivacy @thisismissem @yeechie I appreciate that you have a rough job right now, but I think you fail to understand something.
When your CEO posted about Republicans "standing up for the little guys" and your official account subsequently doubled down on that statement, it caused a lot of people to be fairly concerned because they look at that party and see an authoritarian government that intends to harm many vulnerable populations.
Since then, you have basically went with "you're wrong, we hate authoritarians" without ever really acknowledging that you understand why people are upset? And the fact that you can't acknowledge that leaves us just as concerned.
@protonprivacy @thisismissem @yeechie
Fire Andy Yen.
@protonprivacy @thisismissem @yeechie
I don't believe you, Proton.
@protonprivacy @thisismissem @yeechie honestly it's hard to believe that now, I'm really concerned and seeking alternatives with more integrity, it's quite distressing having migrated most of my online account to your email
I'm just happy I missed that Duo plan this Christmas, so at least my partner is spared the pain of it
Your choices about technical implementation and jurisdiction are sound, but lacking motivation those will change leaving people with no time to find an alternative
@protonprivacy @thisismissem @yeechie
Aside from the encryption at rest, can you assure customers that their emails are not being logged and/or forwarded by you before encryption? Can you assure customers that emails being sent are not logged or forwarded by you after being sent?
How can you provide trust for this statement?
Do you log email metadata (senders, recipients, etc?)
How can you provide trust for this statement?
Can any employee of your organization change this without customer visibility?
How can you provide trust for this statement?
These are the concerns of a current customer, that were not previously being considered until the comments made by your CEO. This is the impact of this breach of trust.
@thisismissem @yeechie @protonprivacy
The Tesla product is indeed as bad: a car that explodes at three times the rate of the Ford Pinto.
And refusing to buy a product is not cancel culture, it is free speech
@thisismissem @yeechie @protonprivacy letting elected officials know that we support their good actions can help shift things in a positive direction. Any positives at all coming out of this admimistration are welcome, for they will be few.
@von @thisismissem @yeechie @protonprivacy
Mussolini made the trains run on time I guess...
@rzeta0 @von @thisismissem @yeechie @protonprivacy
The funny thing about that saying is that he *didn't* make the trains run on time, but it's repeated as though it's true.
@thisismissem @yeechie @protonprivacy look I get it you are worried, but why constantly writing about it under each post? It's been explained. Now we need to sit back and watch. I bet this won't happen again.
We need be a community that understands that ppl sometimes make mistakes. In these hard times we should help Proton, maybe explain, teach. Because they are the change in the world we want to see. If we cancel everyone who makes mistake, the privacy will really be dead.
