It’s now quite possible and highly likely that Threads will be 100x the size of the Fediverse, specifically Mastodon usage within the next few weeks or months at most.
I’m fascinated to see how interoperability will impact Mastodon’s culture because I’m reminded of how the internet changed forever when AOL brought regular people online when it had previously been techies and academics.
@carnage4life I am deeply skeptical that "federation" means the same thing to Threads as it does in the fediverse.
Would Threads legitimately allow users to move their entire Threads profile to another server? Does that sound like something Meta would *ever* do?
There are other logistical issues with federation (e.g., moderation for 100 million users) that I don't think Meta has any interest in actually solving.
Federation really isn't the thing you do last. It's a core feature.
@tob Mastodon doesn’t actually have good support for moving accounts. This is one of the key reasons the Bluesky team built The AT protocol.
Mastodon & ActivityPub are mostly designed around sharing posts across instances not migrating accounts. Easily exporting your account info doesn’t sound like a difficult or insurmountable thing for Meta to do.
@carnage4life Meta blew almost $14 Billion dollars on VR in one year. If they invested a hundredth of that in ActivityPub it would be more than all that has ever been spent on the fediverse.
So yeah, technically, there's nothing Mastodon (or any of the other AP instances) do that they couldn't do and maybe even do better.
There is no doubt a lot of benefit that a good actor with deep pockets could bring to the fediverse.
Meta does not have a history as a good actor.
