As throwbacks go this one is instructive:

#SystemShock has me noticing just how many modern games are Splash Mountain With Gunplay.

One of the core gameplay systems here is the sprawling geography of the station. You have to develop a sense of navigation in order to succeed. Instead of riding a rail, you’re poking around and exploring and that’s part of the fun.

I miss that and wish it were more common.

Stayed up until 2 AM enjoying the #SystemShock beta.

Here’s another thing I love:

There aren’t many “setpieces.” There aren’t many cinematics.

There’s just methodical exploration, problem solving and adrenaline-pumping moments of combat. The intensity is created entirely through atmosphere and the tension of being completely outgunned and under-resourced.

And the non-linear continuity! You can go back and forth endlessly between levels (so far). The station is just opening up to me now.
