One aspect of transition that has been the most negatively impactful for me has been losing a lot of my own professional history. Rather than have my deadname follow me forever, I deleted my github account, and I'm still feeling the negative consequences of that today.
@erincochran@hachyderm.ioSeveral people refused to update their LinkedIn recommendation for me to use my new name and pronouns, so I lost most of those. It's difficult to stand out when you have so little history to show.
But honestly, I'd rather struggle with this than be tied to that name forever. I've experienced firsthand the way people will use that information, and I would rather not give them that chance.
