Except you can't, for the reasons already discussed.
> "But they are awful"
Okay, I agree, and? Adults can figure out what they do or do not read. You don't have to babysit them.
> "I don't want to see that on my timeline…"
Then block them and put a mute on the relevant keywords for yourself, and/or put a limit on them from your instance.
When you #defederate you are acting on your user's behalf and saying "you are not _allowed_ to _follow_ them."
@hrefna There are some traumatized people here who would choose never seeing anyone who looks like they might become a threat (i.e. a server whose owner has been seen with a known racist) over dealing with the threat after it's happened. Someone else (I can't remember who) said, "You can't unsend a thousand death threats."
@hrefna Absolutely this! Also, when you defederate, you create a worse echo chamber of the server you are defederating, allowing views to polarise.
@hrefna the folks running the instance are also adults who don’t need you babysitting them. Or does that not count?
That’s how federation works. Every instance makes its own decisions.
