We need finer grained controls than what are provided today by #mastodon for #blocklists
For instance, what if the tooling allowed individuals or instances to say:
* "Only allow direct messages from this instance from people who are followed or where there is explicit consent to receive a direct message"
* "Automatically hide all content (under something like what's called a CW today) from this server unless there's explicit permission to show it from the user"
* "Block replies to this post"
* "Block replies to this post from these servers."
* "Only show on the public timelines posts from servers that are manually approved or are interacted with by a local user, otherwise do not display them by default"
etc.
We can get _much_ more finely grained than the coarse block/silence/do not block levels we have today.
Several people have also talked about adding _relational mechanics_:
"Only allow unapproved follow requests from people followed by people I know on this server."
etc.
We're talking a lot about #blocklists right now—and for good reason!—but we shouldn't lose sight of the broader question of "what are blocklists trying to accomplish" and "is there a better way to accomplish what blocklists are trying to do."
For instance, can we solve the problems that the #FSEP proposal is trying to solve by adding additional controls that are "safe by default"?
It's worth thinking about.
@hrefna good list! And yeah, since Mastodon has chosen not to provide these tools for people and instances to protect themselves, there’s a lot of reliance on the tool that *does* exist — and blocking an instance is a very blunt tool. Some of these have been requested for years, if the current firestorm leads to Eugen actually starting to prioritize safety — or resources going to forks that prioritize safety — then that *is* making progress on the underlying issue FSEP Is trying to address
@hrefna this is a very good list of permissions we should have

It’s a fascinating democratic technosocial governance exercise to witness the #ContentModeration policy discussions happening on the #fediverse that should have occurred on #SurveillanceCapitalism social media networks.
