Phew, looks like Ilhan Omar held off yet another primary challenge from perennial creepazoid Don Samuels (and by 13 points):

This is more or less expected, but after Cori Bush getting primaried and a surprising close call with Samuels back in 2022, it’s a big relief. I really like having Omar as my rep, and Samuels is just •unbelievably• skin-crawly.

If you read Kritzer’s description of Don Samuels and wonder how the hell this guy ever, ever managed to get on a ballot, much less repeatedly, much less pull 43% of the vote, well…

…congrats, now you know what Minneapolis politics are like. It's all Democrats, but there are effectively two parties: one that's very Ilhan-Omar-y, and one that's like the HOA board teamed up with Bill Cosby to overfund the police. It's a hoot.

@inthehands My parents are part of the HOA arm of the party, and it's stressful.

@sysadmin1138
Ah, I’m sorry you have to deal with that.

(I mean, I do sympathize with that arm of the party: I recently had to drive around a new bike lane that I was not allowed to drive in, which is a personal affront, and also I hear that homeless people exist, which is of course distressing for anyone to have to think about and I shouldn’t have to.)

@inthehands This came to a head in the resolutions to put the strong mayor system in place. Mom had been working on that since Don Frasier, but still,

@sysadmin1138
Uuuuuuuggghhh

I fully reserve the right to be smugly bitter when the city finally elects a Kate Knuth-y progressive mayor and the strong mayor faction utterly loses their shit about the leopard either their face etc.

@inthehands
Hmmm,
Where would you put Tim Walz on that scale? Keith Ellison? Melvin Carter?
More complicated than that.

@Okanogen
Um, I’d describe Walz and Ellison as trying to win statewide elections? I’m speaking here of politics within the city.

Regardless, that’s missing the forest for the trees. The point is that every electorate has its own divisions and fault lines, and forms its own factions. There is no “Democrats think” or “Democrats do;” there are just a whole bunch of people, forming and breaking coalitions all the time.

@inthehands
I think I was responding to your post about Minnesota DFL.

@inthehands
Ok. On closer read I see you said Minneapolis, not Minnesota. Sorry. Nevermind.

@inthehands @RamenCatholic I lived in Hawaiʻi for quite awhile. It’s also all “Democrats” and brought us Tulsi Gabbard. I feel like if this was a contest, that would be hard to beat.

@kyleejohnson @RamenCatholic
She is special, I’ll sure grant you that
