idk... i dont like xmpp that much either... but more because it sucks using it as someone who uses alot of machines... sometimes all of them at once... and expecting to have convos synched between devices... maybe there is a way to have your cake and eat it but i havent found the be all end all of messaging
otoh i dont have many conversations... perhaps i should just suck it up, get a better server to run matrix on...
but otoh again i believe just a little messaging should be absolutely doable on a midtier server and i lean heavily on the notion that perhaps synapses' design is just very silly and not using +20GB of storage for a db that only occasionally gets written to (like literally "one conversation with one partner") shouldnt be too much of an ask...
perhaps it would be sufficient to use https... and something running on that one server but that can be circumvented (mitm-ed, like some firewalls do) so easily.... *sigh*
i mean.. realistically idc if my employer can mitm my chat with my partner... but... like.... come on, nobody should have to accept even their employer, let alone government into their chat history...
._.
idk. i guess i'll stay on my temporary turd of "just use discord until something improves" for a while longer..
@janet_catcus #XMPP+#PGP may be a good option if you don't want to deal with half a dozen #OMEMO keys...
@janet_catcus @kkarhan if the requirement is E2EE so that no-one gets at your conversation, you also need to protect the machine where the client is running, because logs can be obtained that way.
If E2EE is not a requirement, and neither is federation, things like Zulip or rocket.chat may be easier to run
If you want to stay with matrix, I recently learned about https://github.com/girlbossceo/conduwuit which sounds like should give you a better experience.
@viq @kkarhan idk what to think of matrix rn...
https://corteximplant.net/notice/AsTiFSzjy06oZLTXnM
and the update saying it was basically a buttdial isnt convincing me much... sure possible... still seems to fishy to me
@janet_catcus @viq Another option besides #XMPP+#OMEMO is also #PGO/MIME like with @delta / #deltaChat using #eMail...
@kkarhan @janet_catcus @delta PGP is too easy to get wrong
@viq @kkarhan @delta i've[see below] used pgp before, it wasnt as much a nightmare like having a working spamfilter on my vserver... and thunderbirds ui is terrible... and i know i could improve any of those things myself, but i just havent come around to it i guess.. im a terrible sysadmin to myself
anyways, deltachat has been on my android device at least once, still see the deltachat folders in thunderbird, so i guess i never stopped using it :P not sure i got the keys somewhere.. if i need that i cant remember how it works but i'll give dc another look i guess
perhaps felt a bit gimmicky: email with extra steps, kinda way
[hello :] uh, so after thought, i mean im not a good sample size of course but i think i have seen some improved ui in thunderbird so there is some effort to improve pgp on the user side
anyways, good evening and good night :3
