Meteor, Butterfly, Sword deserves so much more than 7.5 rating it has on MDL. It is easily an 8.5 show, better than the modern cdramas rated that high that is being produced these days. The storytelling is
Shows with high popularity and are easily accessible by international audiences ala Netflix gets rated super highly.
A lot of times shows that are not easily available internationally or are older (created before MDL for eg) gets ignored and that's a pity.
Have not heard of this. Adding this to my watch list.
I think my daughter is old enough I am going to start watching some old classics with her like the 1980s and 90s TVB versions of Jin Yong novels.
The classics were just awesome in so many ways.
@chu@climatejustice.social the best adaptations! (No bias!) @liztai@hachyderm.io
I have to agree. I tried the 2014 adaptation of 神鵰俠呂(I can't recall the English title, but it's the one with little dragon girl and the really annoying Yang Guo).
I called it quits after the brothel scene. It got so ridiculous. I feel like the 80s and 90s era ones really understood what JY was trying to get across compared to some of the later, higher tech/budget remakes.
@chu @geraineon ikr I always lament that modern cdrama audiences, especially international folks, just don't know what they are missing. Seeing shows that have bad acting and storytelling raised to unholy levels makes my blood boil a little
@liztai@hachyderm.io @chu@climatejustice.social the problem is, a lot of these older shows are inaccessible to international folks because they are hard to find, and if you can find them, in Cantonese with no English subs...
Most of this is on Youtube now I think. I don't know if they are subbed or not though. I'm a canto speaker so I don't usually look for subs in Canto. ICdrama has a lot too.
People in HK revere JY as a minor deity so they put a lot of effort into portraying his novels.
@chu@climatejustice.social I have no problem with Cantonese either. But that's why it's hard to recommend these adaptations to ppl who don't understand Cantonese and cannot read CN subs. Ah well. @liztai@hachyderm.io
@geraineon @chu I remember trying to watch Pledge of Allegiance badly but ah man, pure Cantonese Chinese subs... Fortunately it's now available on Youtube with eng subs. Woohoo.
Is it any good? I thought that was a mainland production
@chu @geraineon I couldn't watch as it was in Cantonese with no subs then, so I can't say if its good. But the premise was Intriguing - a corrupt security official loses his memory and turbs over a new leaf as he finds out more about his old self.
I take it you're not talking about this. What show are you referring to?
Can you share link?

@chu @geraineon oops crosswire! I mean Relic of an Emissary. My brain does this sometimes
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWWM7d10LOwaUA4ntRXCRKZ0VMTm-h6nf&si=xdNnwl6539dYzXTj
@liztai@hachyderm.io @chu@climatejustice.social OMG this one!!! This is probably the last HK drama i watched before I stopped watching TVB. Do I remember the plot? No. But I do remember very homoerotic sexually charged bathing scene between two men. Should do a rewatch...
@geraineon @chu lolzz ironically this was also my last TVB show too. I remember reading an article lamenting the decline of TV productions and how everything was moving towards the mainland. Sadness
@liztai@hachyderm.io @chu@climatejustice.social yeah. And with mainland's ever changing lines of what's acceptable and what's not, i feel like there's less and less interesting shows
@geraineon @chu ikr. People blame Xi but I think the one responsible is an overeager Napolean trying to impress the big bosses... And then with the actors' careers being destroyed by tax evasion allegations or photos taken at the wrong shrines. I would be popping xanax every day if I was a cdrama actor
@liztai@hachyderm.io @chu@climatejustice.social I have an essay in me that I'm too lazy to put on paper about authoritarianism+desire to control, fandom organization (and how it feeds into both the toxicity and also builds fear for fandoms ability to organize) and qinglang... Ahaha. Anyway. Yes, well. The mechanisms in place for people to overinterpret things carefully.
@geraineon @chu sigh yes. Oh so frustrating they could have the potential to be the next hallyu wave but because of this cdramas these days feel so recycled and bland that when shows like Mysterious Lotus Casebook comes along people are like a thirsty man running after a bucket of water....
@liztai@hachyderm.io @chu@climatejustice.social hahaha yeah. I feel like wow, standards dropped. Anything that's halfway decent, will get lauded. I mean, yes, I enjoyed Mysterious Lotus Casebook but that level of quality should be MORE COMMON!
@geraineon @chu omg I feel your comment hahaha.
We tolerate far too much with cdramas today
I basically drop most dramas after the jealous love rival appears.
You know it's just lazy recycled tropes from there.
@chu @geraineon I dropped #BackFromTheBrink for that reason. Had to skip those episodes to a later episode to finish it.
I really salute how Word of Honour pushed so much past the censors too.
I loved AvenueX's review of it. She said you could hear everyone in China collectively gasp when WKX cut off ZZS's sleeve.
Imagine how much better #CDrama land would be without censorship
@chu @geraineon how it got past the censors is a wonder.
Thought my #CDrama pals would appreciate seeing an old HK Manga of Jin Yong's Condor Heroes
@chu@climatejustice.social @liztai@hachyderm.io Love it! Thank you for sharing. How many volumes are there? Is it still in print?
Not sure. Pretty sure it's not in print though. My friend found it in her old childhood bedroom and thought I'd like to see it.
@chu@climatejustice.social @liztai@hachyderm.io That's nice of her. I remember there were the Return of Condor Heroes manhua back in the libraries of either my school or some public library back in those days
Oh. This could be the same. This is the second one. 神鵰俠侶
It's my least favourite of the series tbh. I thought little dragon girl is too much of a male fantasy. I also did not like the sexual assault themes in it.
That's one thing I appreciate about the new generation of wuxia writers. Many are women and the female characters aren't just male fantasy versions of women.
@chu@climatejustice.social @liztai@hachyderm.io I ragequit watching any and all adaptations, and didn't finish this manhua because same hahaha. But yeah, it's good to see new gen wuxia writers (though I suppose it's not really new new, just newer than Jin Yong's gen, I guess!)
@geraineon @chu it is also my least fav story from Jin Yong. Something about Xiao Long Nu didn't sit right with me
She's a beloved character but I suspect mostly from men. My fav female JY character is probably Mei super wind. 梅超風
Her badassness is just levels of awesome
@chu@climatejustice.social @liztai@hachyderm.io you're probably right... I don't know how's my fav. Maybe Yan Sou Sou XD My fav bits of Heaven Sword Dragon Saber is actually parents' gen, and then I get bored when it comes to Mou Gei
The woman who wrote word of honour is quite good. You should give the novel a try if you liked the drama
@chu@climatejustice.social @liztai@hachyderm.io Can't read CN, so I gotta fix that first XD Will check it out if there's a tl
I bought a copy of the first series in English a few years ago. I bet more is out now
@chu@climatejustice.social @liztai@hachyderm.io ... my brain fart. actually I have read it. But somehow I forgot that WoH = Tianyake
I have read it, and also listened to the audio drama
@geraineon @chu thanks for the reminder. I think I will get the English publications of the Condor Heroes (ebook). I was waiting for them to finish a few books first
I used a lot of wuxia novels to learn Chinese. I'd read a chapter in Chinese then check my comprehension with the translation. I did this with several web novels. By the time I finished Tian ya ke, I was too lazy to bother with the English and pretty pleased at myself I could finish it Chinese only.
I was not in love with the English translation of Condor Heroes. I thought the names in particular were.... questionable. JY is known for the beauty of the names he gives characters and the English was just
