A few days ago I commented that the Chinese on are sensitive about being called Lunar New Year.
I promised I will find the content explaining why.
Lunar calendar - Islamic calendar. Chinese calendar - lunarsolar.
Interestingly, President Obama may be the source of the Lunar New Year term.
I think due to the massive influence of English around the world this term started being used widely, which shows how culture can be influenced/misinterpreted like this. I think the Chinese are upset that someone can just come and rename their festival like this.
(fyi not every Chinese is offended by this btw. Generally Chinese in Malaysia don't seem as bothered, tho we call it CNY).

@liztai My Asian friends (Viet, Malay, and Chinese) have always called it Lunar New Year.

@CurtAdams well just don't say this in china lol.

@liztai
Try calling it Chinese New Year in #ViệtNam and then run somewhere protected to hide! There are numerous Asian countries that celebrate a lunar new year event right now.

@EllenInEdmonton I think Malaysians are the most chill. We don't care either way 😅

@liztai Sure. But it's primarily people of Chinese heritage who celebrate in Malaysia.

@liztai @EllenInEdmonton The TW actors I follow on Instagram have all called it a Spring Festival, according to Google/Insta Translate
