Back from my hike towards Rottalhütte.
Did in the end turn around with 150m elevation to go, since I was mindful of the 1850m decend I still had to do and that had a few tricky parts including a uncomfortably loose steel cable in one ride I had to climb up and down.
But I was definitely worth getting up there. The view onto the glaciers was awesome and I found some Edelweiß!

@mxk What a beautiful hike! Yeah, no need to go all the way— the peak will always be there for you.
@TimKStanton the mountains decide what you can do, not the hiker.
I wasn't sure I wanted to do 2000m of elevation up and down today and with the seriousness of the terrain it certainly was an okay decision to turn around.
What counts is having a good time outside!
@mxk Absolutely— it’s the experience that matters, not the destination. I’ve probably shortened or rerouted half of my trips into the wilderness for that reason.
@TimKStanton can relate, at least for what I do solo. Either I spontaneously extend or I shorten/alter routes quite a lot as long as I am hiking solo.
When I am with other people, it rather depends, I then most often try to provide options and have them choose
@mxk Yeah, I’m almost exclusively solo, so I operate very conservatively with lots of safety margin. Definitely helps going with a group to problem solve the sticky scenarios.
@mxk The edelweiss is still downloading so thank you for the alternate text.
Greetings from the Coconino National Forest in #Flagstaff #uspol and thank you so much for brightening my day.
