Ethan Marcotte, who is one of the most principled and thoughtful people I have ever known and also a dear friend, has resigned from his job at 18F after being asked to meet with shadowy gov-dismantlers. The whole post is worth reading.

Apparently necessary: Do not be an asshole in my replies about something you’d didn’t even bother to read or understand, this is not Facebook.

For the benefit of other non-Americans who are looking on in horror and don't know what 18F is:

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/18F

"18F helps other government agencies build, buy, and share technology products. The team consists of designers, software engineers, strategists, and product managers who collaborate with other agencies to fix technical problems, build products, and improve public service through technology."

@CppGuy @kissane and anecdotally:

they were doing a calibre of work that anyone involved in design systems (and product dev at large) aspired to.

Just a senseless, useless dismantling of a force multiplier.

@ryan @CppGuy 18F is a place I had wanted to eventually land. They did so much essential repair work and built so many things we actually needed. Maybe a dozen of my friends cycled through there over the years to use their skills to improve the lives of ordinary Americans, despite taking sharp pay cuts to do it.

@kissane

I'm sorry that, along with so much else, 18F is being eviscerated.

Not that we needed more proof, but it clearly shows that Doge's vandalism has nothing to do with government efficiency.

@ryan

@kissane same! Unfortunately I'll have to change my search to "places where 18F alum work now."
