For users who want to try #Linux, I recommend this: Do not listen to people who tell you to use #Ubuntu, #LinuxMint or other variants. They all use the same complex and often breaking mechanisms, and can cause a lot of hassle.

Instead, I recommend these systems:

- #Fedora #AtomicDesktops
- #UniversalBlue #Aurora #Bluefin #Bazzite
- #HeliumOS

Looking forward to #SerpentOS too, and trying #NixOS.

These systems are reliable like an Android phone, while offering you more freedom.

So, a few weeks into using my newly #Ubuntu powered mid-2011 #Mac and I'm still very much enjoying it. Knew that the RAM on the machine was a bit wanting (even still, the OS runs fast). So I opened up another same model Mac I have to repurpose some RAM. Discovered that I've been running the Ubuntu machine on only 4gb and the other Mac on 16. So now the Ubuntu machine has 12gb and continues to feel like I've purchased a brand new computer.

Linux gaming update
1. Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs has a Linux version which works mostly fine on LMDE. Some tearing in rapid motion but might be my graphics card/settings.
2. Bluetooth headset (Logi Vibe 100) yeah nah. Works only intermittently which is frustrating and unusable. Should have gone with USB? (headset works well with phone)

Linux update:
+gaming still perfectly adequate, no crashes or glitches (that are not intentional)

+Plugged in logitech wireless trackball reciever, quickly autodetected, working fine, and auto added a battery state icon to system tray!

-sometimes does not quickly detect when I plug in headphones. Sound sometimes briefly heavily distorted the first time it plays.

-network file sharing with windows a bit involved for a noob.

?still haven't tried printing.

@sophie I think I found your setting, thanks. Under the Steam, Settings menu, on the Compatibility tab, select the option "Enable Steam Play for all other titles". All windows games then became available to install. The first one I installed also installed several steam components. The game (The Long Drive) started and ran fine after that.

gaming update: Antichamber installed through Steam no problem and played how I remembered it on Windows 10. Graphics, sound (headphones or monitor speakers) mouse & keyboard all fine. All other games in my Steam library are Windows/MacOS only and I think I'll have to install Proton to (try to) play them. Steam was pre-installed.

#linuxnoob

Is there a hashtag for people interested in moving to #Linux or people who have moved recently that have questions that I could follow to try and help people out? If not, we should settle on one and try and make it known. The more people we can help to get away from the likes of Microsoft the better. #LinuxNoob maybe? Looks like there may be some posts with that hashtag already.
