Right and wrong in the universe are closely tied with the concept of consistency. Virtue ethics has "do unto others and you would have them do unto you". Deontology has "act only in those ways that should become universal law". In contractarianism, consent is the basis of ethics and (absent any other information from those specific other people) we should treat others in a way we ourselves would consent to be treated.

#Capitalism is invalid on the basis of the theory of inalienable rights. Inalienable means can't be given up or transferred even with consent. #Capitalist apologists often appeal to contractual consent to defend the system, so this changes the debate

I just randomly stumbled across some "evolutionary psychologist" and was far too far into the podcast by the time I realized he was a part of the Jordan Peterson cohort.

"You're deontologically harming me" is a new one for me.

SCENE [Inside police station, interview room, generally used for children but now housing a forensic interviewer and a sniffling older man with a bad spray tan, white hair that is slicked back with a smelly palmade wearing a slightly updated style akin to Leisure Suit Larry]

Interviewer: "Where did the bad man hurt you?"

Old man: "Right here," [pointing to right butt cheek on the rag doll] "in my deontology." [gently prods, wincing dramatically]

"Virtue ethics is currently one of three major approaches in normative ethics. It may, initially, be identified as the one that emphasizes the virtues, or moral character, in contrast to the approach that emphasizes duties or rules (deontology) or that emphasizes the consequences of actions (consequentialism)."

The problem that #Bentham is tackling in his #Deontology, is not that the government makes you wear a seatbelt for the good of others but you would actually prefer to do your own thing, it is that the government makes you wear a seatbelt for the good of others but you still want to think of yourself as a good person.

Psssst. #Kant did not really prove #deontology. He only proved a version of rule #utilitarianism, and then he smudged the edges a little to make it compatible with mysticism.

Rule utilitarianism differs from act utilitarianism based on the fact that it doesn't measure the utility of an act. It measures the utility of a rule that you make that a group of people are expected to follow.

It's an effective system because it rewards rule-followers, who tend to have sound moral judgment.
