Forget , Northwestern develops
Using a combination of seawater, electricity, and carbon dioxide (CO2), scientists at Chicago‘s Northwestern University Engineering have developed a new building material that goes beyond reducing emissions. The new material acts like concrete, but actively captures CO2 that’s already in the air and locks it away. Permanently.

First casts! Showing my inexperience, but a great learning opportunity. The concrete looks awesome, it's definitely the right material. But I a) mixed the concrete too wet, b) didn't vibrate out the air bubbles enough, c) didn't let it cure long enough before demolding, and d) was way too aggressive with the demolding. I could probably also stand to reinforce it even more than the fibres in the concrete do. These are the things you think about after, when in the moment you're more focused on engaging and monitoring your five-year-old who is eager to help!

Lying in the grass on a summer’s day about fifty years ago I would have been surrounded by loads of buzzing #bees & other insects. And I do remember those days and I see the difference now.

We only have around 3 in ten of those #insects left nowadays – and decreasing. Bad news for #birds too.

Take it from me, we live in impoverished times in terms of the living #environment.

Don’t let the lifeless padded brick and #concrete be your comfort against that awful reality.

Ya‘ learn something new every day… Today’s lesson was that there’s mud mixers and eggbeaters. If you use a mud mixer for #concrete it gets beat pretty quickly. I’m pouring a pad for a minisplit heatpump.

Also my fingertips get abraded and dried from doing masonry work. Then my Apple iDevice won’t perform fingerprint authentication.
